We’ve all seen the word “detox” thrown around, from juice cleanses to water-only fasts that sound more like punishment than health. What many people don’t realise is: detoxing isn’t a fad. It’s something your body is already doing, every single day.

What detoxing really means

Detoxification is your body’s natural process of clearing out waste and unwanted substances. Your liver, kidneys, skin, lungs and digestive system all play a role in filtering and removing toxins.

Toxins can come from many places, such as:

  • Pesticides and chemicals in food and the environment
  • Ingredients in cosmetics, skincare and cleaning products
  • Air pollution
  • Alcohol and cigarette smoke
  • By-products of your own metabolism and digestion

So yes, your body already knows how to detox. But the real question is: are you supporting those systems so they can work at their best?

Why this matters

When your detox pathways are overloaded or not working efficiently, you may start to notice signs such as headaches, fatigue, skin flare-ups, bloating or changes in bowel habits. Longer term, an overworked liver or kidneys can affect your overall health, increasing risks linked with conditions like fatty liver disease, diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

By supporting your body’s natural detox systems, you can improve how effectively you remove toxins, improve your energy, and protect long-term health.

Common detox misconceptions

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to “go on a detox” to reset your health. Strict juice fasts or extreme cleanses can do more harm than good, if not appropriate.  Instead, small, consistent choices can lighten your body’s load and strengthen its ability to do the job it’s already designed to do.

Once a year (or so), I run a reset program where we focus on nourishing meals and simple daily habits to support the body’s natural detoxification. This includes practices like focused breathing, staying well hydrated, grounding, and spending time in natural sunlight. If you’d like to be notified when the next reset begins, sign up to my newsletter.

Signs of toxic overload

How do you know if your body could use more support? Here are some signs that your detox pathways may be under strain:

  • Persistent fatigue or low energy
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Bloating, constipation or irregular bowels
  • Skin problems like acne, rashes or eczema
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Strong reactions to alcohol or caffeine
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Unexplained muscle or joint aches

If these sound familiar, it could be a sign your body is working harder than it should to process and eliminate toxins.

How to support detox naturally

Here are some practical ways to help your body’s detox systems do their job:

  • Eat a wholefood diet rich in vegetables, fruit, quality proteins and fibre
  • Stay hydrated with plenty of water
  • Exercise regularly to support circulation and lymphatic flow
  • Prioritise sleep, as many detox processes are active at night
  • Manage stress, which can disrupt our gut microbiome, interrupt our detoxification processes and increase our desire for high sugar, high fat processed foods and alcohol.
  • Limit alcohol and avoid smoking
  • Choose organic when possible and always wash fruit and veg
  • Reduce plastic use to lower exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals
  • Try skin brushing or sauna to support detox through the skin

Do you need supplements?

Sometimes. Nutrients play key roles in detoxification, but your needs depend on your diet, lifestyle, and health conditions. That’s why it’s best to seek personalised advice before taking supplements.

What to watch for

When you make changes that support detoxification, you might notice temporary side effects as your body adjusts, such as mild headaches, changes in bowel habits, or skin flare-ups. These usually pass as your body finds balance, but ongoing symptoms are a sign to get professional support.

Action step

Take a look at your daily routine and choose one area where you can ease your body’s load,  whether that’s swapping soft drink for water, aiming for 7- 8 hours of sleep, or buying organic apples instead of conventional ones. Small steps make a real difference.
