We’ve all seen the word “detox” thrown around, from juice cleanses to water-only fasts that sound more like punishment than health. What you may not realise is that detoxing isn’t a fad. It’s something your body is already doing, every single day.
The short version
- Your body detoxes naturally every day through your liver, kidneys, skin, lungs and digestive system
- Toxins come from many sources, not just food, including skincare, cleaning products, air pollution and stress
- When your detox pathways are overworked, you may notice fatigue, brain fog, skin flare-ups, bloating and more
- You don’t need a juice cleanse or extreme fast to support detoxification
- Small, consistent habits around food, sleep, movement, hydration and stress make the biggest difference
- Supplements can help, but personalised advice is always better than guessing
What detoxing really means
Detoxification is your body’s natural process of clearing out waste and unwanted substances. Your liver, kidneys, skin, lungs and digestive system all play a role in filtering and removing toxins.
Toxins can come from many places, such as:
- Pesticides and chemicals in food and the environment
- Ingredients in cosmetics, skincare and cleaning products
- Air pollution
- Alcohol and cigarette smoke
- By-products of your own metabolism and digestion
So yes, your body already knows how to detox. But the real questions are:
- Are you supporting those your organs and systems so they can work at their best?
- How can you decrease your exposure to toxins?
Why detoxification matters
When your detox pathways are overloaded or not working efficiently, you may start to notice signs such as headaches, fatigue, skin flare-ups, bloating or changes in bowel habits. Longer term, an overworked liver or kidneys can affect your overall health, increasing risks linked with conditions like fatty liver disease, diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
By supporting your body’s natural detox systems, you can improve how effectively you remove toxins, improve your energy, skin, bowel function and protect long-term health.
Common detox misconceptions
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to “go on a detox” to reset your health. If not appropriate, strict juice fasts or extreme cleanses can do more harm than good, ( I recommend you don’t do one unless under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner). Instead, small, consistent choices can lighten your body’s load and strengthen its ability to do the job it’s already designed to do.
Once a year (or so), I like to spend a few weeks focusing on nourishing meals and simple daily habits to support my body’s natural detoxification. As well as focusing on nourishing meals, I include practices like focused breathing, staying well hydrated, grounding and spending time in natural sunlight.
Because it’s not just what we eat that makes a difference. Sleep is when your brain literally flushes out waste through the glymphatic system. Stress, when it becomes chronic, can burden the liver and slow digestion. Movement supports lymphatic flow, which has no pump of its own and relies entirely on your body being active. Even the air you breathe and the products on your skin play a role in what your body has to process each day.
That’s why supporting detoxifications goes beyond whats on your plate. Focused breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and support lymphatic drainage. Staying well hydrated keeps the kidneys and bowels moving efficiently. Grounding and time in natural sunlight help to reduce inflammation, regulate cortisol, support vitamin D and anchor your body clock. Small, consistent practices, working together, creating real change from the inside out.
What are the signs I need to detox?
How do you know if your body could use more support? Your body is incredibly good at telling you when your detox pathways are under pressure. Here are some signs to look out for:
- Persistent fatigue or low energy, even after a good night’s sleep
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Bloating, constipation or irregular bowels
- Skin problems like acne, rashes or eczema
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
- Strong reactions to alcohol or caffeine
- Trouble sleeping or waking unrefreshed
- Unexplained muscle or joint aches
- Heightened sensitivity to smells, chemicals or synthetic fragrances
- Mood swings, irritability or feeling flat without a clear reason
- Puffiness, particularly around the face or eyes in the morning
- A coated tongue or strong breath, especially first thing
If several of these sound familiar, it’s worth paying attention. You may have passed them off as just getting older or being a bit under the weather. They’re often your body’s way of signalling that something in the load it’s carrying, whether that’s processed food, stress, poor sleep or environmental exposure, has tipped past what it can manage.
The good news is that these symptoms are also some of the first things to shift when you give your body the right conditions to recover. Small, consistent changes to what you eat, how you move, how you sleep, and how you manage stress can make a surprising difference, often more quickly than people expect.
How to support detox naturally
Here are some practical ways to help your body’s detox systems do their job:
- Eat a wholefood diet rich in vegetables, fruit, quality proteins and fibre
- Stay hydrated with plenty of water
- Exercise regularly to support circulation and lymphatic flow
- Prioritise sleep, as many detox processes are active at night
- Manage stress, which can interrupt detoxification and increase cravings for processed foods and alcohol.
- Limit alcohol and avoid smoking
- Choose organic when possible and always wash fruit and veg
- Reduce plastic use to lower exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals
- Try skin brushing or sauna to support detox through the skin
Do I need supplements when detoxing?
Sometimes. Nutrients play key roles in detoxification, but your needs depend on your diet, lifestyle, and health conditions. That’s why it’s best to seek personalised advice before taking supplements.
What to watch for when detoxing?
When you make changes that support detoxification, you might notice temporary side effects as your body adjusts, such as mild headaches, changes in bowel habits, or skin flare-ups. These usually pass as your body finds balance, but ongoing symptoms are a sign to get professional support.
Where to start
Take a look at your daily routine and choose one area where you can ease your body’s load, whether that’s swapping soft drink for water, aiming for 7- 8 hours of sleep, or buying organic apples instead of conventional ones. Small steps make a real difference.
If you’ve been feeling tired, bloated, or like your body is simply working too hard, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
