You eat well, move your body, yet do you still feel like your fighting your own biology? If you’re flat by mid-afternoon, hungry an hour after eating, or stuck with the same number on the scale this might be your body telling you your metabolism isn’t functioning optimally.

Key Takeaways

  • Constant tiredness, cravings and slow weight loss are often signs your metabolism is now working optimally
  • A stalled metabolism usually needs to be reset not more restriction
  • Losing strength alongside weight loss can indicate muscle loss, which slows your metabolism further
  • Metabolism changes with age and life stage, so what worked when you were younger may not work now
  • Personalised approaches like Metabolic Balance work with your body’s individual responses to food helping to achieve results faster

There’s more to metabolism than fast or slow. It’s a complex, individual system that responds to food, stress, sleep and movement. The way your metabolism responds to a meal may be totally different to the way your partner or friend responds to the same meal. When your metabolism is out of balance, your body sends signals. Most of us have just learned to push through them, ignore them or blame ourselves for being weak.

Here are 7 signs I see that indication your metabolism isn’t working optimally, you may want to pay attention next time they happen!

1. Your sleeping well but you’re still tired

If you’re getting seven to eight hours sleep a night but still find the afternoon drags, you may not need more sleep. It’s often a sign your body isn’t converting food into steady, usable energy. Blood sugar swings are a common culprit here: your blood sugar spikes after eating, followed by a crash that leaves you reaching for coffee or something sweet just to help you function.

2. You’re hungry an hour or two after eating

If you’re hungry again a couple of hours after eating, your body may not be getting what it needs for your cells to function. This can occur even if you’re eating enough but what you’re eating doesn’t include the right balance of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Many meals are high in carbohydrate and low in protein and fat which can lead to those hunger pangs a couple of hours after eating.

3. Weight loss stalls despite doing everything right

This can be one of the most frustrating signs your metabolism isn’t working as well as it should. Eating less or exercising harder is rarely the answer. A stalled metabolism usually needs recalibrating, not restricting.

4. You’ve lost strength, not just weight.

If the number on the scale is dropping but your also feeling weaker, tire more easily, or have noticed your clothes fit differently but in a way that doesn’t feel like your toning up, it may be muscle loss rather than fat loss. This matters. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so losing muscle can make your metabolism less efficient over time.

5. Your cravings feel outside your control

Cravings where you can’t think about anything else until you eat is often your body responding to blood sugar instability or a nutrient gap.

6. You’re stressed and it shows up in your body

Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated and high cortisol can increase blood pressure, lead to fat storage and increases your appetite for highly palatable foods i.e. high fat and high energy foods. In today’s world, stress is often a constant, and your metabolism may have been adjusting in a way that isn’t in your favour.

7. What worked before no longer works

Your metabolism isn’t static. It changes with age, hormones, stress and life stages, which means the approach that worked when you were 30 may not work when you are 45 or 55.

What actually helps balance your metabolism?

If you’ve been nodding along as you’ve been reading, it’s not your body falling apart it’s your body communicating with you. It’s not running optimally and it wants you to make some changes.

A few things that I often see help in these situations.

  • Protein, fibre and healthy fats as part of your first meal of the day, rather than a coffee, piece of toast or skipping breakfast altogether helps to steady your blood sugar for the morning.
  • Resistance training protects muscle and helps to keep your metabolism efficient.
  • Prioritising sleep and stress recovery to help your body manage cortisol, appetite and fat storage.

But there’s a limit to what general advice can do and you may already be doing all the recommendations above. Your metabolism, your biochemistry and your lifestyle is individual. What shifts the needle long term is understanding how your body specifically responds to food: which meals stabilise your energy, which patterns are working against you and where your particular sweet spot is. It’s something that’s difficult to work on alone. I’ve spent over 12 years studying and supporting clients to do exactly this and i’d love to support you. If any of this sounds familiar, rest assured there are answers.

Frequently asked Questions:

Can a slow metabolism cause weight gain?

Yes, although it’s rarely about metabolism being simply slow or fast. It’s related to how well your body is regulating blood sugar, stress hormones and enegy use. All of these can affect weight over time.

Is it normal for my metabolism to change as I get older?

Yes. Hormonal shifts, changes in muscle mass and life stages all influence how your body processes food, which is why an approach that worked in your 30’s might not work as well later in life.

Do I need to cut carbs or count calories to change my metabolism?

Not necessarily. Restriction is often the opposite of what a struggling metabolism needs. The focus is on recalibrating what you eat and when to match your body’s needs.

How do I know my metabolism needs support?

If you’re experiencing several of the signs in this article, like unexplained tiredness, stalled weight loss, hungry a couple of hours after eating or cravings it’s worth having a conversation about what is happening and looking at what you can do to support your metabolism.

What is Metabolic Balance and how is it different?
